The Phantom of the Opera is a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Charles Hart and additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe. Based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel of the same name, the musical premiered in London’s West End in 1986 and has since become one of the most celebrated productions in musical theatre history. Set in the Paris Opera House during the 19th century, the musical combines romance, mystery, and tragedy through the story of a mysterious masked figure who becomes obsessed with a young soprano. Featuring iconic songs such as “The Music of the Night,” “All I Ask of You,” and “The Phantom of the Opera,” the production is renowned for its dramatic score, elaborate costumes, and spectacular stage effects. For its 2026 Cologne engagement, Cameron Mackintosh's acclaimed new production makes its German debut at the Musical Dome Köln on 5 November 2026. Originally unveiled in 2012, this staging is directed by Seth Sklar-Heyn, based on Laurence Connor's original direction, with artistic oversight by Matthew Bourne and Cameron Mackintosh. The production brings a fresh theatrical interpretation to the classic musical while preserving its celebrated music and gothic atmosphere.
