At the heart of this season is Leo Tolstoy's "War and Peace," one of the most important works of world literature, which will be performed as a large ensemble production at the Central Theatre. Using the original text, Armin Petras has written a play for the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus that condenses the sprawling source material into an intense five-hour theatrical experience. On a stage designed by Karoly Risz for the Central Theatre, 13 actors embody more than 35 characters from this impressive social panorama set during the Napoleonic Wars at the beginning of the 19th century. The contrasting concepts of war and peace mark two ends of a spectrum on which human life has always unfolded. The text explores how war manifests itself in the political and private spheres, thus reaching far into our conflict-ridden present. The play is directed by Tilmann Köhler, whose work is characterized by a strong narrative drive and a high degree of political awareness. At the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus, he has directed, among others, Shakespeare and Fallada.
