Written by Nick Payne (Constellations) and directed by Tony nominee Knud Adams (English, Primary Trust), The Unbelievers begins with the devastating premise of a family searching for their 15 year old son. However, this is not simply a play about a search. At its heart, it is about a mother’s unwavering love—and the extraordinary lengths to which love and hope can and will take us. Payne has an incredible knack for finding humor in the strangest and most unexpected places, even when dealing with tragedy and deeply heartbreaking subject matter. He does it again here, with this beautiful and moving new script. Told through a nonlinear, time-jumping structure, The Unbelievers moves back and forth through the family’s story, slowly revealing the traumas and questions that refuse to settle into place. Following its sold-out London run in 2025, this new Off-Broadway production, starring Lauren Ambrose and Tom Riley, asks us to question the things we think we know about our ordinary lives: faith, love, fact, and the stories we tell ourselves to make sense of the inexplicable, and to keep going. But above all, it asks one devastating question: When—or even if—do we give up hope?
