In Die Passagierin, the German Lisa travels by ship to Brazil with her husband. It is 1960, looking ahead to the future. But when Lisa believes she sees the Polish woman Marta on board, she is confronted with a dark past. Lisa was an SS camp guard at Auschwitz, and Marta was one of her prisoners. Director Tobias Kratzer brings this powerful story to life in a striking set: a cross-section of a cruise ship. Past and present overlap in a deeply unsettling opera by Mieczysław Weinberg about the shadow of Auschwitz.
