The Gymnase du lycee Aubanel is a unique performance venue located in Avignon, France. Originally serving as a standard high school gymnasium, it undergoes a dramatic transformation every summer. Since 1985, this everyday space has been converted into a temporary theater specifically for the famous Festival d Avignon. The venue was first adapted as a stage for the renowned Polish director Tadeusz Kantor. Today, it features a comfortable and fully functional auditorium with a capacity of approximately 500 numbered seats. It is highly valued for showcasing diverse, world-class theatrical productions and contemporary plays during the festival season. The space successfully demonstrates how ordinary urban architecture can be ingeniously repurposed into a major cultural hub. It remains an iconic symbol of Avignon shifting entirely into a vibrant theater city each summer.
