La Boite
Sophocles' classical tragedy receives a dynamic contemporary staging at La Boite Theatre, directed by Courtney Stewart and Nigel Poulton. This three-actor interpretation strips the ancient narrative to its philosophical core: a young woman's moral stand against authoritarian rule. Following a brutal civil war in the fictional state of Thebes, the newly crowned King Creon decrees that one brother receives honourable burial while the other is denied this rite as punishment for disloyalty. Antigone defies this edict by secretly burying her brother, prioritizing family obligation and divine law over state authority. Caught and unrepentant, she faces execution, setting in motion a cascade of tragedy that tests the limits of power, loyalty, and conscience. The production emphasises the play's urgent relevance to contemporary questions about justice, dissent, and resistance to oppression, performed by Maddison Burridge as Antigone alongside Billy Fogarty and Hayden Spencer in multiple roles t
