“Why do I make theatre?” Recently, Kim Sujung has begun asking herself this question. Her new work, I AM KIM SUJUNG, turns away from the broader social issues she has explored in her previous works, instead taking an intimate look at the life of an individual.
Kim Sujung has spent her life pretending not to love, not to be happy, and not to believe, striving to live in a way that would never leave her disqualified in anyone’s eyes. But why? And can she continue to live this way and still be all right in the years to come?
Looking back at the self who never wanted to be disqualified, Kim Sujung attempts to find answers to these questions. Living through multiple identities—as an artist, a woman, and a daughter—she begins to confront her own life rather than turn away from it any longer.
This work is also the story of countless others who, like Kim Sujung, struggle to avoid being deemed inadequate or disqualified within our society. I AM KIM SUJUNG is at once a deeply personal story and a universal story of us all.
