vi. Medea in Athens: The Son Found After murdering her children, Medea flees to Athens to King Aegeus, who grants her asylum on the condition that she bear him the long-awaited heir to the throne. We witness a couple living out a bourgeois marriage fueled by substance abuse: Medea, playing the "tradwife," and her new husband Aegeus—a cynical, debauched head of state—have surrendered themselves entirely to alcohol. Then the doorbell rings: a certain Theseus is standing outside, claiming to be Aegeus’s son. Drawing inspiration from that classic "well-made play," *Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?*, Roland Schimmelpfennig has penned a fast-paced, viciously dark satyr play that extends the Medea myth into our own era of a crumbling bourgeoisie.
