Together with his friends, Henri Pollak (owner of the small moped with the chrome handlebars) attempts to save his conscripted buddy Kara...—what was his name again?—from being sent to Algeria. There is a war on in Algeria—a dirty colonial war, at that—and said Kara-what’s-his-name has absolutely no desire to play the hero there. War, they all agree, is not a pretty thing; it might even be a crime. The goal, then, is to thwart the military’s intentions—at least in this one instance—and spare Kara-what’s-his-name from the war. The Parisian clique—a group of intellectuals and free spirits—are, unfortunately, far more adept at philosophizing and debating than at the simple practicalities of solidarity... Georges Perec’s text is surely the most comical and anarchic defense of pacifism and the rights of the individual against a militarized state in the history of literature. It is being brought to the stage for the first time by Anita Vulesica, whose production *Die Maschine oder: Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh*—also based on a text by Georges Perec—was invited to the Theatertreffen in 2025, won the 3sat Prize, and received the NESTROY Award for Best Production in the German-speaking world.
