SARDINES

About the show

New Year's Eve. The last gasp of 2002. When street-kid Jason breaks into recluse Gloria’s house, he’s met with the unfriendly end of her rifle. Jason was born everything but lucky and has way too many batteries. Gloria hasn’t left her home for years. She doesn’t like people...especially people who talk too much. Jason talks way too much. As the night wears on, and the two strangers interrogate each other’s damaged past, their mutual animosity fades. With the dawn of the new year comes shared hope and possibility. Hellie Turner gives us a potent and rich story of two very different characters moving from conflict to understanding in a tender examination of forgiveness, healing, and growth. Winner of the 2006 WA Premier’s Award for Script, this hidden gem receives its long overdue Perth production. Funny, poignant, and at times dark, Sardines is an elegant and touching work from one of Western Australia’s stateswomen of playwriting.
