THE WILD duck

It all begins in a bourgeois living room. A space full of order, courtesy and well-kept secrets. This is where the Ekdal family lives – seemingly modest, seemingly content. But as with so many worlds that seem stable, this one is also built on a foundation of lies. Hjalmar Ekdal believes in his invention, in his role as a good family man, in a future that gives him meaning. His wife Gina keeps everyday life together, pragmatically and quietly. Hedvig, the sick child, lives among them – sensitive, imaginative, full of longing for recognition. And the wild duck that gave the play its name? She lives in the attic of the Ekdal family, a shot and rescued animal that serves as a pet and play partner for old Ekdal and his daughter. A symbol for all those who have been injured and only survive because they retreat into a protective illusion. by Henrik Ibsen German by Hinrich Schmidt-Henkel Director : Selenium Kara Dramaturgy : Margrit Sengebusch
