Lauded director Iain Sinclair (West Gate, A View from the Bridge) helms this taut rendition of Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize–winning dark comedy about a suburban house overflowing with guests, starring Sigrid Thornton (Mother Play), Erik Thomson (Packed to the Rafters) and Nadine Garner (The Doctor Blake Mysteries). Wealthy couple Agnes and Tobias’s domestic life can be described as comfortable, though it is somewhat complicated by Agnes’s sister Claire having moved in with them. This precarious equilibrium is up-ended when their best friends Harry and Edna arrive, menaced by an inexplicable threat, in search of lodgings. Meanwhile, Agnes and Tobias’s adult daughter Julia, emerging from her fourth divorce, also seeks refuge in the family home. As the house fills up with residents, tensions rise and conversations evolve from amicable to acerbic – hinting at deeper, undisclosed wounds. Much like Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? before it, A Delicate Balance unfolds with Albee’s signature wit and incisive eye for modern urban anxieties. Inspired by real individuals from the playwright’s family, the play is animated by the idiosyncrasies and imperfections of its characters. This pitch-black tale of interpersonal fragility holds a mirror to the unspoken resentments and emotional evasiveness of today’s relationships.
