In June 1800, Rome is gripped by political upheaval. When the opera singer Floria Tosca's lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, shelters an escaped political prisoner, both become entangled in a dangerous web of power and coercion. The tyrannical chief of police Baron Scarpia uses torture and threats to force Tosca into an impossible choice: surrender her honor to save Cavaradossi's life. Set across three iconic Roman locations—a church, a palace, and a fortress—Puccini's masterwork unfolds with mounting intensity. Director Shawna Lucey presents this beloved production at the War Memorial Opera House, featuring Clelia Cafiero conducting one of the composer's most celebrated scores.
