Ionesco's darkly comedic political parable follows a provincial town where citizens progressively transform into destructive rhinoceroses. As debate rages over whether the inexplicable phenomenon is truly occurring and what responses are appropriate, the thick-skinned creatures rapidly gain majority status. Only Bérenger, the steadfast anti-hero, retains his humanity in a world overtaken by rhinos. Director Luise Voigt stages this absurdist classic as an examination of totalitarian ideology's spread and the seductive appeal of mass movements, following her acclaimed production of Sankt Falstaff.
