"Someone must have slandered Josef K., for one morning, without having done anything wrong, he was arrested." Insight into the ensuing proceedings—the very meaning of the trial—remains hidden from K. to the very end. On the contrary: the more he attempts to assert his innocence, the more he seems to become entangled in a maze of impenetrable laws. Time works against him, as if every new attempt at clarification only breeds further confusion. Johanna Wehner, also known here in Frankfurt for her adaptations of novels featuring multiple voices, will bring the text to the stage in her own version, which is characterized by its musical use of language. Productions she has directed at Schauspiel Frankfurt include Dracula, Job, and, most recently, an adaptation of Thomas Mann’s novel Buddenbrooks.
