Times are tough when Pinneberg and Lämmchen learn they are expecting a child together: mass unemployment, the Great Depression, and political unrest. Nevertheless, the couple decides to marry on the spur of the moment. Yet their small, private happiness is soon put to the test as Pinneberg finds himself in increasingly precarious employment situations. He endures performance pressure, humiliations, and tyrannical bosses to avoid slipping into unemployment. It is only thanks to Lämmchen that Pinneberg does not completely lose his footing; her belief in love is unshakable, and her vitality remains unbroken. Nearly a century after the publication of Fallada’s novel, director Luise Voigt takes a keen interest in the parallels to the present day. Inspired by the grand revues of the 1920s, she transforms the story into a spectacular show set squarely in the 21st century.
