At first glance, the Tyrone family appears unremarkable. Father James and mother Mary are spending the summer at their holiday home with their sons, Jamie and Edmund. Yet, over the course of a single day, the idealized veneer of their family life begins to crumble. Amidst alcohol-fueled verbal clashes, a portrait emerges of a family struggling for closeness and confronting their shared past. Layer by layer, they lay bare memories, unfulfilled desires, and unresolved wounds. In this drama—which premiered only after his death—Eugene O’Neill draws upon his own family history and his lifelong struggle with guilt, addiction, and the quest for understanding. Director Max Lindemann (known for Phädra in Flammen and Sweet Bird of Youth) frequently focuses his work on the complex emotional lives of his characters, bringing O’Neill’s moving family drama to the stage with great sensitivity.
