About the show

This stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's novel follows two Afghan women whose lives become intertwined during the Taliban era. After war orphans Laila in 1992, her neighbour Rasheed takes her as his second wife. Mariam, his first wife, must accept her younger rival into their home. As the Taliban consolidate power, the household faces escalating violence, hunger, and oppression. The two women, initially divided by circumstance, discover unexpected solidarity as they navigate survival in a brutally repressive world. The production, adapted by Ursula Rani Sarma, was co-produced by Birmingham Rep, Nottingham Playhouse, and Leeds Playhouse, following a successful 2025 run at Birmingham Rep.
