Hockadoo! Memphis, a city alive with hot rhythms and soul-stirring music, where rock ’n’ roll is about to spread far beyond its roots. In 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, a time when racial discrimination and conflict were deeply entrenched, Huey, a young white man obsessed with rock ’n’ roll—a genre considered “Black music”—visits an underground club in the Black neighborhood. There, he hears Felicia, the younger sister of the club owner Delray, singing and becomes determined to share her music with the world. Huey begins applying for jobs as a radio DJ, only to be rejected time and again. One day, he visits WHDZ, a white-only radio station, and sneaks into the booth while the DJ is away. Before long, Huey is blasting rock ’n’ roll across the airwaves. Though his unauthorized broadcast causes a major uproar, calls from teenagers captivated by the music flood the station. Impressed by the unexpected response, WHDZ owner Mr. Simmons gives Huey a two-week trial period. Huey has finally become a radio DJ, while Felicia dreams of performing her music on a bigger stage. As their love and music begin to cross the boundaries of a divided city, what will become of Huey and Felicia—and the music they believe in?
