In 1990 the Melbourne production opened, following the replica format, where it remained opened for 2 and half years and established a new record for the longest-running show ever staged in Victoria. Following its success, selling over 1,510,100 tickets in Melbourne, a production in Sydney was opened before beginning a tour around Australia and New Zealand until 1998. This production ended up being the starting point that lead to the creation of the First World Tour in 2004, where in 2007 it passed by Australia to tour a few cities - also known as the Second Australian Tour - in which Anthony Warlow returned to reprise his role as The Phantom.
