An inventive operatic adaptation of a classic 900-year-old tale, this production centers on Huang Wuniang, a young woman longing for her exiled beloved Chen San during the Song dynasty. As her memories unfold, the audience witnesses the story of their fateful encounter come to life. The narrative interlaces threads of modern youth with this timeless folk tale about love and loss. Directed by Zeng Long, son of renowned Liyuan opera master Zeng Jingping, and featuring Hong Kong Cantonese opera artist Jason Kong as dramaturg, this work seamlessly merges traditional Chinese opera with contemporary minimalist theatre aesthetics. Liyuan opera, with roots spanning 900 years, is celebrated for its timeless elegance and simplicity, and the Chen San and Wuniang story remains its most enduring classic.
