Organist Cameron Carpenter performs an original composition for organ accompanying the 1934 Chinese silent film Sports Queen. The film, starring Li Lili and directed by Sun Yu, follows a young woman who dreams of becoming a top sprinter but faces the competing pulls of urban Shanghai life. Her journey explores themes of personal ambition, duty, and the meaning of true sportsmanship. Carpenter, renowned for reimagining the possibilities of classical organ performance, has created a new score specifically for this screening. The premiere combines cinematic storytelling with symphonic music performed on the Hong Kong Cultural Centre's monumental four-manual Rieger organ, featuring 93 stops and 8,000 pipes. The event merges groundbreaking musical interpretation with an important work from early Chinese cinema.
