PEARL BAY

About the show

Pearl Bay is a Cantonese opera produced by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts' School of Chinese Opera, supported by the China National Arts Fund 2024. The work combines traditional operatic artistry—including singing, acting, recitation, and martial performance—to explore themes of human connection and environmental harmony. Set against fishing village scenery, the narrative centers on a conflict between the new Pearl Kingdom ruler and the villagers who harvest pearls from the bay. A young fisherman and a princess from the aquatic realm sacrifice themselves to restore peace, ultimately leading to renewed coexistence between the two communities. Following successful performances in Guangzhou and Hong Kong in 2025, the production is touring to Macao in 2026.
