1964 was a time of uncertainty. The world was at a crossroads of change, deciding which path to choose. Major developments were happening politically, culturally, socially and within the Catholic Church. There were those willing to embrace change and progress, and there were those who believed in the security of past certainties. Doubt by Shanley confronts opposing views within the church, work, art, education and life at that time. It explores the challenges of a progressive society and a progressive church. It debates the need for moral clarity and questions the role of faith in both our public and private lives. It searches for a definition of sexual abuse. And above all, it considers the possibility of 'doubt'. If you believe this play to be about nothing more than an alleged scandal, consider otherwise.
