The Everyman
Brian Friel's play examines a pivotal moment in Irish history through the story of Gaelic leader Hugh O'Neill during the late 16th century. Set against the backdrop of English occupation and the impending Battle of Kinsale, the work explores the secret marriage between O'Neill and Mabel Bagenal, the alliance of Irish clans with Spanish forces, and the events that would reshape the Irish political landscape. Central to the drama is the question of how history is recorded, interpreted, and retold across generations. The Everyman's 2025 revival, directed by Artistic Director Des Kennedy in his inaugural season, featured a distinctive creative approach with two actors portraying O'Neill at different life stages. The production brought together an internationally acclaimed team and a cast of established performers, examining themes of resistance, revolution, and the construction of historical narrative.
