San Francisco Opera
Mozart's comic opera follows the servants Figaro and Susanna as they plan their wedding at Count Almaviva's newly constructed estate. When the Count attempts to prevent their marriage and seduce Susanna, the couple enlists the help of the Countess to outmaneuver him. Through schemes, disguises, and mistaken identities across four acts, the servants repeatedly outwit their master. The production reimagines the work in early America, with Erhard Rom's set design featuring construction scaffolding, blueprints, and freshly plastered walls that suggest a new world challenging old hierarchies. Conductor Sebastian Weigle makes his San Francisco Opera debut leading the ensemble through Mozart's beloved score, which blends comedy with an examination of power and class dynamics between the household's members.
