About the show

I Am My Own Wife is a play by American playwright Doug Wright. Written as a one-person play in which a single actor performs 35 roles, it is based on the true story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf. The work premiered in South Korea in 2013 as part of the Doosan Humanities Theater 2013: Big History program. Through the character of Charlotte, I Am My Own Wife presents a life that resists easy definition or categorization. Rather than fitting within conventional labels, the play explores the ambiguity of identity and existence, revealing how one’s boundaries are continuously reinterpreted through history, relationships, context, and power.
