Set in 1987 in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, Real Women Have Curves: The Musical follows Ana García, a brilliant 18-year-old Latina who dreams of leaving her immigrant neighborhood to attend Columbia University. However, her ambitions clash with her traditional mother’s expectations and the harsh financial reality of her family's struggling garment factory. To help her sister Estela complete a massive, make-or-break order of 200 dresses, Ana reluctantly joins the factory floor alongside four other Latina women. Amidst the sweltering heat, intense deadlines, and the constant fear of immigration raids, Ana initially feels trapped, using her journal to document her frustration. As the deadline approaches, the factory floor transforms into a sanctuary of raw honesty, deep connection, and healing. Through shared laughter and tears, the women open up about their struggles with body image, societal beauty standards, immigration status, and personal relationships. This profound sisterhood sparks a massive transformation in Ana, teaching her to embrace her own body and deeply respect the resilience of the undocumented women around her. Ultimately, the women successfully complete the order to save the factory, and Ana prepares to leave for New York, empowered by her identity and determined to carry the powerful stories of her community with her.
