Camp Siegfried by Bess Wohl is a gripping two-hander that explores teenage romance set against the sinister backdrop of fascist indoctrination. It follows two young American teenagers of German descent at a real-life 1930s summer camp on Long Island where they fall in love while absorbing Nazi ideology. The play is inspired by a genuinely dark chapter in American history. In the 1930s, the German American Bund operated a real-life Camp Siegfried in Yaphank, New York. At this camp, children and teenagers spent their summers engaging in typical camp activities while being heavily groomed and indoctrinated with Nazi rhetoric and anti-Semitism.
