Constanza Macras orchestrates a vibrant, provocative journey through the lives of Europe’s Roma communities in this genre-defying production. Blending professional dancers with Roma musicians and performers, the show delves into the complex realities of a people caught between nomadic traditions and sedentary life. Through a kaleidoscope of personal stories, music, and dance, we witness tales of single mothers fighting for education, young men trapped in cycles of drugs and prison, and individuals like Raimund, who became Fatima, challenging cultural norms. Macras’ creation defies easy categorisation, seamlessly fusing contemporary dance with traditional Roma elements to create a non-linear, almost revue-like experience. The piece navigates a tightrope between humour and heartbreak, confronting stereotypes and discrimination while celebrating the resilience and vitality of Roma culture. By placing Roma performers on equal footing with her international dance company, Macras crafts a work that is neither victim art nor romanticisation, but a nuanced exploration of identity, prejudice, and the true meaning of nomadism in the 21st century.
