Darlee is a second-generation British-Iraqi woman, as she navigates her relationship with her Iraqi father and her own identity. Guided by a chorus of supernatural beings called the Qareens, the play explores Darlee’s memories and her father’s experiences, shifting between past and present, from her childhood to her father’s migration to England and the challenges they face in the wake of the Gulf War and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Through a series of episodic scenes, David-Pimlott’s raw and darkly humorous writing delves into the emotional and psychological impact of war on both those who experience it firsthand and their loved ones. The play’s non-linear narrative, in-yer-face style, and direct audience engagement create an immersive experience that highlights the complexities of family, love, and identity in the face of cultural barriers and the lasting effects of trauma. “Baghdaddy” is a poignant and powerful piece of contemporary theatre that sheds light on the experiences of immigrants and their families, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
