Hooligans: For sociologists, they are a species, toxic masculinity, pure biology, a concept, a performance, a role-playing game. Philipp Winkler describes one of these hooligans in his novel. Heiko is a hooligan, body and soul. Nothing is more important to him than his club. He's never asked himself why. He rarely goes to the stadium anymore; the real action happens after the game anyway. Far from the singing stands and stadium security, they meet for man-to-man fights—hard, but fair. Until someone is left lying on the ground, as the code of honor demands. Under the leadership of Uncle Axel, the radicalism with which he and his friends fight is Heiko's only lifeblood. He belongs to this family, can be part of a powerful community he can believe in. He knows no fear, only adrenaline. Injuries heal. But then a friend is seriously injured, others drop out. For them, there are now more important things than the adrenaline rush of the matches. When the rules of the game suddenly change, Heiko has to watch as his tough, masculine world, the structure that holds his life together, slowly but surely falls apart.
