A topsy-turvy world: Speculator Herr von Goldfuchs, living on the first floor, loses his fortune and is forced to declare bankruptcy, while penniless clerk Adolf Schlucker, on the ground floor, becomes a rich man after an unexpected inheritance. Love is also in complete disarray in Herr Zins's tenement building. Orderliness is nowhere to be found. Johann Nestroy's musical satire on the vagaries of fortune became a theatrical sensation after its premiere in 1835: Two floors simultaneously on one stage was unprecedented. To this day, this concept provides a compelling image for the dialectic between abundance and scarcity.
