It covers the early life, rise to power, charity work, controversies and death of the Argentine political leader Eva Perón, the second wife of the Argentine president Juan Perón. Evita officially premiered on Broadway on September 25, 1979, at the Broadway Theatre, following runs in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Directed by Harold Prince, the landmark musical defied mixed reviews to become a monumental success, running for 1,567 performances.
