Comic book hero Popeye, the muscle-bound sailor, is constantly fighting all sorts of adversaries, usually to rescue his longtime girlfriend Olive Oyl from dire straits. In "Amour," everything is different: author Sivan Ben Yishai makes the sidekick Olive the main character, and the two comic book figures become prototypes for contemporary heterosexual relationships. Intimate matters are discussed publicly because social power dynamics are inscribed in the stories of the body. As a perceptive observer of her own love life, Olive dissects the ambivalence between female self-determination and getting lost in old relationship patterns—only to reinvent herself in the end.
