Peter Stein’s production, in association with the RSC, opened at the Edinburgh Festival before transferring to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre as part of the Complete Works Festival. It was the German director’s first English-language production and was dedicated to John Barton’s 1968 version, which he had seen in Zurich. Stein’s production was visually impressive and featured a large metal back wall which transformed into a platform on which semi-naked warriors fought. To emphasize the theme of lechery being the cause of war, a huge red bed descended from above to reveal a romping Paris and Helen. The central romantic pairing featured Henry Pettigrew as a lovesick Troilus and Annabel Scholey as a provocatively sensual Cressida. Critics also praised Paul Jesson's wonderfully wanton Pandarus. Played as part of 2006-2007 Complete Works Festival. A production by the Edinburgh International Festival and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
