Director Gregory Doran and designer Robert Jones set their production on a nineteenth century Levantine island with crumbling walls and faded columns. In this Illyria, the shipwrecked Viola (Nancy Carroll) was transformed into a dashing Cesario, who clearly appealed to the playful Olivia of Alexandra Gilbreath. Other inhabitants on the island included Richard McCabe's flatulent Sir Toby Belch and James Fleet's delightful Sir Andrew Aguecheek. Richard Wilson was a suitably disdainful Malvolio, a deluded fantasist who was completely unaware that he was a figure of fun. Even his smile was a sinister baring of dentures.
