Merry Wives the Musical included a score by Paul Englishby and lyrics by Ranjit Bolt. Music ranged from Verdi to Lloyd Webber, with some Gilbert and Sullivan and American Country and Western thrown in for good measure. Simon Callow was a suitably comic Falstaff and the embodiment of shabby gentility but the show was stolen by Judi Dench as a mischievous Mistress Quickly, who in her frizzy red wig and knowing looks, combined comedy, pathos and self-deprecation.
