Bailey set the production in an authoritarian Italy of the 1940s. Ruth Sutcliffe's stage design was dominated by a vast bed, from which drunkard Christopher Sly had his dream. The action of the play took place above and in between the crumpled bedsheets. An obese and tattoed Sly (Nick Holder) made his entrance in grubby underpants and remained on stage throughout, watching the play-within-the-play.
