Gran Teatre del Liceu
La Gioconda by Amilcare Ponchielli, with a libretto by Arrigo Boito, is the only Italian opera not written by Verdi that remains in the repertoire from the period between Donizetti's Don Pasquale and the rise of Puccini. The opera combines Verdian melodies, Venetian choral passages, Wagnerian orchestration, French Grand Opéra dances, and a finale anticipating the verist-naturalist repertoire. Set in a mysterious, gloomy Venice, this drama in four acts tells a story of passion and villainy, featuring arias like 'Suicidio' and the famous 'Dance of the Hours'. A new co-production by Gran Teatre del Liceu and Teatro San Carlo in Naples.
