Sam Max lives in Brooklyn, New York, and is a writer, director, musician and designer. Sam Max has received work and residency grants from National Sawdust, The Mastheads, Cutting Ball Theatre, Hermitage Artists Retreat and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts in New York; Sam Max has presented work at the Under the Radar Festival, the Museum of Sex and Joe’s Pub in New York, and is currently developing their first feature film. Sam Max was recently named in Filmmaker Magazine as one of the 25 Faces of Independent Film. As a playwright, Sam Max won the New Dramatists’ multi-year residency grant (2021–2029) and was included by Young & Hungry in the list of Hollywood’s Top 100 New Writers. One of Sam Max’s plays has been staged in German-speaking countries: Zaun. Pidor und der Wolf, a musical and political reimagining of Peter and the Wolf, is available in translation. For this play, Sam Max won the Chesley/Bumbalo Playwriting Award, was a finalist at the O’Neill National Playwrights Conference and received an honourable mention for the Relentless Award.
