Tim McGarry

Passionate about interrogating and developing new Australian work, Tim trained in theatre at WAAPA and works as a writer, actor and director. He is currently under commission with Black Swan State Theatre Company to create a new work for their 2026 season. His writing credits include – for CDP Producers Being Beethoven, Brisbane Festival/QPAC Trent Dalton’s Love Stories, Queensland Theatre Trent Dalton’s Boy Swallows Universe, Christine Dunstan Productions Colleen McCullough’s Tim, Australian Chamber Orchestra There’s A Sea In My Bedroom, Sydney Opera House Families Unit Music for the Dreaming and The Nutcracker. For the Sydney Opera House Baby’s Proms Meeting Mozart, Swing Baby Swing, Monkey Baa Theatre Company’s Thursday’s Child, Hitler’s Daughter, I Am Jack, Goodbye Jamie Boyd, The Peasant Prince, True Story of Mao’s Last Dancer, The Bugalugs Bum Thief, Milli, Jack and the Dancing Cat, and for the Sydney Symphony Who Needs A Conductor Anyway. He translated and wrote additional content for the Australasian version of Spot the Dog, for CDP Theatre Producers. Tim co-devised The Pirate Ship for Urban Myth Theatre Company SA, A More Fortunate Life for Theatre Ink and EscapAIDS for the One Night Stand Theatre Company, a work which targeted both young people at risk and the WA prison population about HIV AIDS. His directing credits include – for the Australian Chamber Orchestra Finegan Kruckemeyer’s The Princess and the Pea and the Brave Escape, There’s A Sea In My Bedroom, Dear Santa. He directed two new works for Sydney Opera House Presents (in collaboration with ABC Classic FM) Music for the Dreaming and Sounds like Australia. He co-devised a new work for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra with Simon Tedeschi Who Needs A Conductor Anyway. In 2018 Tim stepped in as interim Director on Caleb Lewis’s Maggie Stone for the Eternity Playhouse. Between 2005-2017 Tim was a Creative Director and Producer at Monkey Baa Theatre Company, one of Australia’s largest touring companies for young audiences, where he co-wrote and produced nearly 20 new Australian works, including the critically acclaimed Goodbye Jamie Boyd, award winning Jackie French’s Hitler’s Daughter and Sonya Hartnett’s Thursday’s Child. Tim directed multi award winning The Peasant Prince – The True Story of Mao’s Last Dancer, which toured 36 theatres nationally. He assistant directed on Tim Winton’s The Bugalugs Bum Thief and was the remount Director on The Unknown Soldier, a new Australian play written by Sandra Eldridge. In 2017 he worked as dramaturgical consultant on Randa Abdel Fattah’s Where the Streets Had a Name.
