Awoye Timpo is a visionary Brooklyn-based theater director and producer celebrated for her insightful, culturally resonant staging and her dedication to expanding the theatrical canon. Known for her collaborative spirit and sharp artistic eye, she has directed for prominent national institutions such as New York Theatre Workshop, Atlantic Theater Company, and Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Beyond her resident and guest directing roles, she serves as a Creative Arts Consultant for the African American Policy Forum and is the Founding Producer of Classix, a transformative collective of artists dedicated to exploring and celebrating dramatic works by Black writers and Black performance history. Recognized for bringing profound emotional depth and historical awareness to the stage, she has helmed critically acclaimed productions including Alice Childress’s Wedding Band for Theatre for a New Audience, Elyria at Atlantic Theater Company, and the world premiere of Ngozi Anyanwu’s The Homecoming Queen. Her extensive portfolio spans diverse projects, from Wole Soyinka’s The Swamp Dwellers to creative concert performances, including staging for the 2020 NBA All-Star Game. Timpo’s exceptional artistic contributions and her impactful advocacy with Classix were recognized with a prestigious Obie Award for Direction, establishing her as a vital and influential leader in contemporary American theater.
