 1. Billy Elliot

Blue Square Woori Bank Hall | April 12 – July 26, 2026

The beloved musical Billy Elliot returns for its fourth Korean production. Based on the iconic 2000 film of the same name, the story follows Billy, a young boy in a struggling British mining town, who discovers a life-changing passion for ballet.

Renowned for its score composed by legendary musician Elton John, the show is far more than a simple coming-of-age story. It delves deep into the sociopolitical landscape of 1980s Britain, exploring working-class struggles, political tension, and queer identity with profound sensitivity.

Since its 2005 West End premiere, it has swept prestigious honors including the Olivier and Tony Awards. In Korea, the production has maintained a stellar reputation since its local debut in 2010, consistently winning top honors like Best Actor at the Korea Musical Awards and The Musical Awards.

2. Seopyeonje

 Kwanglim Arts Center BBCH Hall | April 30 – July 19, 2026

The musical Seopyeonje, adapted from Lee Cheong-jun’s novel and famously popularized by the film of the same name, returns to the stage once again. This production is a lyrical exploration of the essence of art and the complexities of familial bonds.

Since its premiere in 2010, Seopyeonje has enjoyed immense popularity, now celebrating its sixth run in 2026. The unique fusion of Pansori (traditional Korean operatic storytelling) with modern musical theater creates a deeply resonant narrative about the fate of a family of traditional singers.

The performance has a running time of 150 minutes (including a 20-minute intermission) and is open to audiences elementary school-aged and above.

3. Navillera

Seoul Arts Center CJ Towol Theater | May 2 – May 17, 2026

Based on the hit webtoon of the same title, Navillera will be staged at the Seoul Arts Center this May. The story centers on Deok-chul, a 76-year-old man who decides to pursue his lifelong dream of ballet in the twilight of his life, and Chae-rok, a 23-year-old ballerino who becomes his teacher.

Through the medium of dance, the musical delivers a touching message about friendship and ambition that transcends generations.

Now in its third run since a highly successful 2019 premiere, the production has already proven its universal appeal, having been exported to markets in Japan, China, and Taiwan.

4. Uncle Vanya

 LG Arts Center Seoul | May 7 – May 31, 2026

In the realm of theater, 2026 is defined by a striking trend of "reinterpreting the classics." This is best exemplified by the simultaneous stagings of Anton Chekhov’s 1899 masterpiece, Uncle Vanya. Both the National Theater Company of Korea and LG Arts Center are presenting their own distinct versions—Banya Ajae and Uncle Vanya, respectively.

Because their performance schedules overlap, theater enthusiasts have a rare and exciting opportunity to compare two different directorial visions of the same source material. Seeing both productions back-to-back is highly recommended for those who wish to appreciate how contemporary Korean theater breathes new life into nineteenth-century Russian literature.

5. The History Boys

 Link Arts Center PECO Hall | March 19 – June 14, 2026

Alan Bennett’s celebrated play, The History Boys, continues its run through mid-June. Set in a British grammar school, the play masterfully balances humor and heartbreak as it depicts the clash between two teachers with opposing educational philosophies and their students striving for admission to prestigious universities.

A profound meditation on the purpose of knowledge, the pressure of examinations, and the very meaning of life, this production remains one of the most thought-provoking pieces available to audiences throughout the month of May.
