Have you ever had one of those days where everything that could go wrong, did go wrong?

We’ve all been there. But usually, when things fall apart, we feel stressed.

Last Saturday, I went to the Hale Center Theatre, UT to watch a play where things falling apart was actually the best part of the day.

Peter Pan Goes Wrong - Wikipedia

and honestly, it was the most I’ve laughed in a long time. If you’re looking for a reason to escape a boring routine or just need a good laugh, this is the show for you.

The Hale Centre Theatre in Sandy is such a beautiful venue. Just walking up to the building gets you excited for the show. Before heading to my seat, I had to stop by the photo spot. Taking a picture at the designated photo spot is a must! It’s a great way to remember the night, and it really sets the mood before the chaos begins.

A Techie’s Perspective: I’ve Been There!

As a Sound Designer and Engineer, I went into this play with a very specific perspective. I already knew the plot: it’s a "play-within-a-play" where a group of amateur actors tries to put on a production of Peter Pan, but they face endless technical disasters.

Looking at the stage from my seat, I knew I was in for a treat. Because of my background as an AV Technician and spot operator, I could 100% relate to the "accidents" on stage. While watching, I couldn't help but think about all the times I worked backstage.

I remembered moments from my own career like when a microphone wasn’t turned off in time and the audience heard a private conversation from the wings, or when a piece of the set suddenly snapped, or a prop didn't appear on cue. In those moments, the actors have to use improv to save the show. Seeing those exact nightmare scenarios played out for comedy was so relatable and hilarious to me. It felt like the play was speaking directly to my professional life!

The Art of Controlled Chaos

One thing people might not realize is how hard it is to act "badly" or make "mistakes" convincingly. If the actors aren't precise, the audience might just think the actual production is low-quality. But these actors were incredible. They were so talented that they made the mistakes look like natural, accidental occurrences.

As a sound person, I was especially focused on the Sound Effects. The comedic timing of the music and the cues was perfect. The sound didn't just sit in the background, it worked together with the actors’ movements to make every accident hit harder.

There is a specific part toward the end where things become a total "mess" (in the best way possible). This chaotic sequence lasts for about a minute or more. Usually, if a scene is that unorganized for too long, the audience might feel tired or bored. However, the way they constantly shifted the set, the bold actions of the actors, and the perfectly timed music kept the energy high. It was a "grand disaster" (translation 대환장파티) that was perfectly choreographed.

Interaction and Connection

One of my favorite parts of live theater is the interaction. In this play, the actors sometimes talk to the audience or react to boos and cheers. The audience at Hale Centre was so witty with their responses! It made the show feel alive and different from any other night.

By the time the curtain call happened, my face actually hurt from laughing. Seeing the actors take their bows after destroying the stage for two hours was wonderful.

Why You Should See It

The reason I truly loved this play is that it’s for everyone. Sometimes, theater can feel a bit "deep" or use difficult language that makes people feel bored if they aren't theater experts. Even as a theater major, I feel that way sometimes.

But Peter Pan Goes Wrong felt like a reflection of our daily lives. We all deal with accidents and things going wrong every day. We know when we’ve messed up, but we just have to find a way to move on and keep going. Seeing this play reminded me that even when life is "perfectly broken", it can still be "perfectly beautiful" in its own way.

If you’re in Utah and want to have a fun night out, please go see this. Whether you’re a tech professional like me or just someone looking for a laugh, you won't regret it!
