Korean Murder Ballad is my favorite musical of all time.
Above all, I was captivated by its music. I also loved the way the story unfolded through the Narrator, whose presence guided the audience from beginning to end. Moon Jin-na’s powerful performance as the Narrator was especially unforgettable. Her commanding voice did far more than tell the story—it became the emotional driving force of the entire production.
Although Murder Ballad originated as an Off-Broadway musical, the Korean production never felt like a simple adaptation of a Western work. Instead, it was so seamlessly reimagined that it felt as though it had been created specifically for the Korean stage. The music, performances, and staging came together naturally, creating an experience that felt uniquely Korean.
Even though I already knew how the story would end, I found myself completely drawn in every time I watched it. That is why I returned to the theater whenever it was revived.
Recently, Korean musicals have been gaining tremendous popularity among Japanese audiences. I would like to explore what makes them so compelling.
I believe the answer goes far beyond outstanding vocal ability. The overall quality of the productions, the expressive performances of the actors, and the creativity behind the staging all combine to create the distinctive appeal of Korean musicals. Murder Ballad was the production that first made me realize this, and it inspired me to look more deeply into what makes Korean musicals so special.
