The Lives of Others has returned to the stage following its 2024 premiere. Based on the film of the same name by director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck— which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006 and earned worldwide acclaim — The Lives of Others brings an analog sensibility to the stage. Set against the cold backdrop of the Cold War era, it unfolds a universal message of "the recovery of humanity" through that analog warmth.
Looking into Another's Life, Coming Face to Face with Yourself
The story is set in 1980s East Germany, as the East-West Cold War nears its end — a chilling era in which surveillance and wiretapping governed the daily lives of ordinary citizens. Stasi agent Wiesler is assigned to keep Georg Dreyman, a playwright, and his partner Christa, an actress, under round-the-clock surveillance. In the interrogation room, Wiesler is the cold, unfeeling mouthpiece of the state. But as he begins to eavesdrop night after night on the artists' lives, their love, and the small moments of their everyday existence, hairline cracks begin to form in the rigid convictions he has held for so long. What begins as surveillance meant to control and document the lives of others becomes a journey in which Wiesler — long imprisoned within the vast machinery of the state — starts to reclaim the humanity he had lost.
This revival boasts an even more finely tuned ensemble, with Namoo Yoon, Donghwi Lee, and Seunggil Jeong— all warmly received in the original production — returning to reprise their roles. The director, who comes from an acting background, Sangkyu Son(손상규) has woven together the characters' gazes, movements, and delicate emotional arcs with meticulous care, achieving a theatrical appeal entirely distinct from the source film. Having demonstrated a broad acting range across diverse genres in Showman, On the Beat, and Reparer Les Vivants, Namoo Yoon (윤나무) begins by portraying Wiesler's dry, thoroughly suppressed affect before subtly rendering the gradual return of human warmth. Alongside him, Seunggil Jeong(정승길) brings depth to Dreyman — a man torn between his pure devotion to art and the tragedy of his times — while actor Suhyeon Kim(김수현) delivers a richly layered performance that captures both the imposing authority of the regime and the very human fractures beneath it, completing a seamless ensemble on stage.
A Stage that Produces a Different Kind of Thrill from the Film
With nothing more than a spare set and classic furniture, the production conjures the cold, suffocating air that was particular to East Germany. The highlight of this production comes in the latter half, when Dreyman realizes the existence of the secret guardian who protected him. Above his head — above a man who believed himself to have been perfectly safe — a tangle of wiretapping devices and knotted wires comes cascading down from the ceiling. The wires stretching across the stage serve as a symbol of the surveillance that bore down on an entire era, while simultaneously bearing witness to the one conscience — Wiesler's — that refused to be broken within it.
The scene transition that follows, in which Wiesler — now a janitor — walks silently out from amid the heap of wires, leaves a profound afterimage: a piece of direction possible only in theater, surpassing anything a film cut could achieve.
Though it wears the costume of a period drama, the questions The Lives of Others poses remain just as urgent for those of us living in 2026. In a contemporary society that endlessly observes and judges others, and readily intrudes upon their lives,"How free are we, really — and how well are we holding on to our human warmth?” A work that paradoxically asks after the most essential human values through an era in which surveillance and control were taken for granted.
