Sejong Center for the Performing Arts is located near Gwanghwamun Station, putting you within easy reach of Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seochon, and Bukchon — a neighborhood packed with things to see and do.

These days, heading straight home after a show just feels like such a waste!! So here's the ultimate route for making the most of the rest of your day — perfect for catching up on all the post-show talk you didn't get to finish with your theater companion.

1. What's On at Sejong Center Right Now?

Sejong Center is currently presenting the musical Beethoven, the play Oedipus, and a range of classical music performances.

The musical Beethovenis inspired by the life and artistic spirit of Ludwig van Beethoven, tracing his passionate struggle to complete his music in the face of fate and the deeply human anguish that came with it — all set against sweeping, magnificent music.Set in 1810 Vienna, the show follows the genius composer as he loses his hearing and faces one trial after another — the withdrawal of his patronage, family conflict, the threat of his deafness being exposed — yet ultimately refuses to surrender to despair, pressing forward with his convictions as a musician and confronting his own destiny.

The play Oedipusreimagines one of ancient Greek tragedian Sophocles' most celebrated works through a contemporary lens, telling the story of a man who tries to escape his fate only to find himself inexorably drawn toward it.Abandoned at birth because of a cursed prophecy, the prince Oedipus rises to become king of Thebes — only to discover, as he searches for the cause of a plague ravaging his kingdom, that he himself is the subject of that very prophecy. The work poses profound questions about fate, truth, and the limits of what it means to be human.

Beyond these two productions, Sejong Center has a full slate of classical performances running throughout the summer, making it one of the best places in the city to soak up some culture during the heat.

2. Lunch Recs | What Are We Eating Today?

A good meal is the foundation of everything! First up, let me introduce some of Seochon's best restaurants.

To start,Gonggi Sikdang (Air Restaurant)is a cozy little curry shop tucked into the alleyways of Seochon, serving a variety of Indian-style curries including butter chicken curry and tan tan curry. The butter chicken is delicious, but personally, I found that trying the "Curry of the Day" — which changes daily — made for a genuinely exciting experience. There's something fun about wondering what today's curry will be. And a pro tip: pair your curry with a cheese quesadilla. Trust me.

Next up,Nuha's Forest (누하의 숲)— a Japanese home-cooking restaurant where I'd recommend the chicken nanban set and the karaage set. If you're a group of three or more, you may be seated in the tatami room, which has a wonderfully cozy, lived-in feel. Don't miss the yuzu yogurt served as dessert — it's a real treat.

And finally,Myeongnan Sikdang (Mentaiko Restaurant)— unlike the other spots mentioned here, this one takes its last order at 2:20 p.m., so you'll need to arrive early. It might mean rushing a little, but the ochazuke and onigiri here are clean, simple, and utterly addictive — the kind of food that keeps coming back to you long after the meal. With both group seating and a bar counter available, it works equally well for solo diners and larger parties.

3. Walk It Off at a Prop Shop!

Now, no visit to Seochon would be complete without a stop at its charming little shops. The neighborhood is dotted with all kinds of specialty stores and boutiques.

My personal Seochon shop list includes…

  • Seochon Favor (서촌파보르)
  • Boan Yeogwan (보안여관)
  • Chaekbang Oneul (책방오늘)
  • Smultronställe (스물트론스텔레)
  • ofr Seoul
  • All Right (올라이트)
  • Colly Billy (콜리빌리)
  • One More Bag (원모어백)
  • Papier Frost (파피어프로스트)

…among others! Even if you only pop into two or three that catch your eye, you'll find the time has flown by before you know it.

My personal top picks are Boan Yeogwan, All Right, and Papier Frost.

Boan Yeogwanoperates as an exhibition space, bookshop, and café all at once. You can take in exhibitions by various artists free of charge, while also browsing an independent bookshop stocked with a range of self-published titles. All Right (올라이트)is a space made for people who love to document and record — selling all manner of notebooks, notepads, postcards, and more. It might just be the perfect place to find your next theater journal.Papier Frost (파피어프로스트)is also a shop for the record-keepers among us — but where All Right centers on notebooks, Papier Frost puts the act of "recording" itself front and center. From pens and notepads to washi tape and notebooks, everything you need to document your life is here. One lovely touch: with every purchase, Papier Frost includes a letter written for that month — and reading a new letter each time you visit is a small joy all its own.

4. Time to Rest | Today's Café Pick

5.png

After lunch and a round of shop-hopping, it's time to recharge at a café. Before the afterglow of the show fades away, here are some spots where you can dive into a lively post-show debate with your theater companion — or quietly gather your thoughts about the performance on your own.

Café Sarab (카페 사라브)is a Middle Eastern dessert café nestled in the alleyways of Seochon, charming visitors with its distinctive menu — including the Mirage Bingsu and Dubungi. Also worth trying is the tangy-sweet Jeju mandarin sherbet, a perfect antidote to the summer heat.Veranda (베란다)is a quiet hanok book café — an ideal spot for sinking into quiet reflection about the day's performance. Settling in for a tea break alongside their tomato marinade toast sounds like just the thing.
